As the battle for the title continues between the Red Sox and the Cardinals, three craft breweries have more than just hometown bragging rights on the line. Schlafly Beer (St. Louis), Harpoon Brewery (Boston) and Boston Beer Co. have put faith in their beloved baseball teams, hoping to bring home more than just a World Series Championship.
As the Schlafly blog suggests, President Dan Kopman is a betting man, and has entered two separate wagers with the Boston breweries. Should the Cards end up on top, Harpoon president Dan Kenary will be receiving a keg of Schlaflly beer to be poured in the taproom, a liquid reminder of defeat. On the other hand, should the Sox prevail, Schalfly will have Harpoon IPA on tap until the keg runs dry.
As for the bet with Jim Koch, Samuel Adams founder, there’s a little more on the line. The blog lays out the details: “Before all was said and done, Jim had offered up two cases of Boston Lager and a lobster dinner. Not to be outdone, Dan not only offered up some Schlafly Pale Ale and BBQ dinner from Pappy’s Smokehouse…and then raised the stakes to include the losing city shipping off a brewer, all expense paid, to the winning city’s brewery to help brew a victory beer.”
So what does Schlfaly beer taste like? “Twelve World Series Championships” says the St. Louis brewery. A hefty claim, but these guys are just as proud of their beer as they are their baseball: “St. Louis is the home of the best fans in baseball and the best beers in the U.S. I look forward to our twelvth World Series victory and then visiting my good friend Jim and toasting with a Schlafly Pale Ale. May the best team win!”
Here’s what Koch had to say about Beantown:
“Here in Boston, we are lucky to be home to some of the best sports teams in the country. The Boston Red Sox are the epitome of passion and true American tradition. I look forward to seeing the team bring home the World Series trophy once again—and then toasting with a Boston Lager. May the best team win!”
