As part of their Local Fields series, Hangar 24 Craft Brewery in Redlands, Calif., brews their Gourdgeous imperial porter with more than 1,000 pounds of pumpkin harvested just a half-mile from the brewery at Larry Jacinto farms.
As they’ve done in the past with other special ingredients, Hangar 24 invited their fans out to the brewery on September 10, to help clean, cut and deseed the gourds to prep them for brew day.
Once the pumpkin has been prepped, Hangar 24 will enlist the help of another local business, Gourmet Pizza shop in downtown Redlands to roast the pumpkin in their industrial pizza oven.
Hangar 24 describes the beer as an intriguing mix of chocolate and spice…the flavor is robust with notes of dark chocolate, pumpkin pie and a caramel sweetness accentuated by a generous addition of molasses to the boil. The interplay of the cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and allspice gives this beer a very pleasant finish.
Gourdgeous will be released in the Hangar 24 tasting room on Saturday, October 6 and Southern California distribution begins Monday, October 8. Keep track of the latest from Hangar 24 in their news and events blog or on Facebook and @hangar24brewery on Twitter.
