Who needs a full-fledged blog when you have 140 characters or less to update craft beer lovers of your every move in real time? Twitter exemplifies the zeitgeist of the twenty-first century, and no one in the suds-soaked sphere is more in vogue than Tony Magee (@LagunitasT), owner and founder of Lagunitas Brewing Company in Petaluma, Calif. (and soon to be Chicago, Ill.). Unapologetic and never shy, Magee’s rapid-fire, stream-of-consciousness tweets place you smack-dab in the middle of his roller coaster life as he is preparing to open a second Lagunitas production facility in Chicago by late 2013.
Lagunitas Brewing Company has been a craft beer pioneer not only for its unadulterated representation of bold West Coast flavors, but also for its successful navigation of the industry’s rough waters in the 1990s. Similar to other breweries out west, Lagunitas is now reaping the benefits of their perseverance by expanding both their existing brew house and opening up a new one further east. The only thing more exciting than the growth of the craft beer industry itself is Magee’s running narrative of the daily highs and lows of opening a new brewery. And although Lagunitas’s motto is “Beer speaks. People mumble,” Magee’s voice is loud and clear: Lagunitas is here to stay.
