Philly Beer Week 2010

By Guest Blogger

Far be it for an English glam-rocker to tell the City of Brotherly Love how to do anything, but Sir Elton hits the nail on the head when he exults in “Philadelphia Freedom,”

I like living easy without family ties
Till the whippoorwill of freedom zapped me
Right between the eyes

An ode to Billie Jean King or a damn good anthem for a week devoted to craft beer? Brother, it sure as heck ain’t about the cream cheese. It’s a little more along the lines of a 1,000 beer-related events at 195 locations in and around Philly, from June 4 through June 13. Philly does its beer big—so big in fact, that they have extended the standard seven-day week into a Philly-sized, ten-day week. Breweries from all over the country will be on hand to pour their wares, with the additional bonus of having the personalities that made the beer famous on hand to provide commentary, offer the occasional toast, and to mingle with their fellow craft beer aficionados.

As if a whole lot of beer isn’t enough to lift Rocky’s famously crooked smile, so too does the lucky attendee get to sample food galore. Not just cheese steaks, either. Great food from the city’s numerous pubs, saloons, and eateries will be available to complement the quaffables. Depending on the venue, there are brewery-specific beer dinners, beer and food pairings, and the everyday menu items that make Philly a great place to eat year round.

See the Calendar of Events for a peek at some of the Philly Beer Week events. For a more comprehensive view, visit www.phillybeerweek.org. Or do as thousands of beer geeks are already planning and hit up the Cradle of Liberty for a tall cold pint and an eyeful of Philly’s finest attractions.

Cheers, Philly!
