Tampa Bay Beer Week: March 3-10March 2, 2012
Tampa Bay Beer Week starts Saturday and runs through the 10th of March. TBBW’s , Ben Mills was kind enough to provide an idea of how the week came together to CraftBeer.com.
Tampa Bay Beer Week started with an inquisitive email sent out by Justin Clark from Cigar City to every brewer and distributor he knew in the Tampa Bay area on the 18th of January. It was a simple invitation for those interested in creating a beer week in the same vein as the esteemed Philly Beer Week. It wasn’t just to be a celebration of Tampa beer for local Tampa residents, but to showcase the entire Tampa Bay area’s connection to, and love of, fine beer. The subsequent meeting in Cigar City Brewing’s board room was packed. Everyone who received an email was in attendance. People who competed every other day of the week were there to collaborate, and a tight knit group was formed.
The wheels were set in motion as the distributors directed their sales staff to locate and organize quality events and promotions. It has included brewers being brought in from across the country, rare kegs and bottles being shipped in, outrageous specials and exquisite beer and food pairing events. Home brewing clubs got on board with educational events for both beginner and advanced home brewers. Tabanero Cigars even has been preparing Cigar City Brewing Maduro aged cigars, aged in the grain and beer from Cigar City Brewing’s Maduro brown.
Mission Statement: Celebrate Tampa Bay beer culture and showcase the area as an emerging and vibrant craft and specialty beer destination.
Tampa’s Beer Scene
We get asked often by visitors to our area about the beer scene, and we think that this is a great introduction. Visitors already know that we have the best weather and beaches in the country. Most know that we have baseball spring training and great theme parks. But what they don’t know is the one-two punch we have when it comes to beer! Tampa Bay Beer Week will let the world in on our secret. Not only do we have incredible breweries making startlingly delicious and complex/drinkable beer, we have distributors that bring in rare beers from every corner of the globe, many which are never seen outside their local range of distribution.
In planning Tampa Bay Beer Week, we have strove for balance. We have events on both sides of the bay. More importantly, we wanted to create a variety of events, some to satisfy the most advanced palates (sours, Belgium’s, barrel aged…etc..) and others to introduce beginners to beers to beers they might not know they love. Every event is friendly, and the more questions asked, the happier we are.
