Kelsen Brewing Releases Vinátta Russian Imperial Stout

Share Post

Kelsen Brewing Company is excited to announce its first annual release of Vinátta Russian Imperial Stout.  This 12% ABV beer is a collaboration between Kelsen Brewing Company and Cask & Vine, a local Derry restaurant focused on craft beer, great wine and fine food.  Beginning today, Vinátta Russian Imperial Stout will start arriving in limited quantites at select craft beer stores and restaurants in Southern New Hampshire.

Vinátta, Norse for “friendship”, is a bold Russian Imperial Stout that required 4 separate mashes to produce one six-barrel batch of beer.  This beer has a big, chewy mouthful and has flavors of prunes, licorice, leather and tobacco.  This is a bold beer that pushes the limits of an already extreme beer style.  “We intentionally chose to brew a Russian Imperial Stout with pure, classical brewing ingredients.  We didn’t want barrel-aging, fruits or other adjuncts to mask the complexity of a 12% stout.  This was a very difficult and time-consuming beer to brew and we are very pleased with the feedback from our customers at the brewery launch event”, said Erik Olsen, Kelsen Brewing Co-Founder.

In early reviews of the beer, Beer Advocate has the beer rated as a 95, or “World Class”.  Jeff Lyons of New England Beer Reviews gave Vinátta a perfect 5.0/5.0.

Andy Day, Owner of Cask and Vine, commented on the name of the beer, “The guys at Kelsen chose us to be the first bar in the area to serve their beer on draught. We crushed through 6 kegs of their Double Battle Axe IPA when it was first released.  That trust and friendship we have established since then is really helping to solidify Derry’s name on the New Hampshire beer map.  Vinátta, Norse for friendship, seemed like the perfect name for our collaboration beer.”  Andy Day also directed and produced a short movie about Vinátta.

The beer was released last Friday at the brewery and the brewery’s stock of 25 cases sold out in 3 hours. Vinátta will be brewed once per year in limited quantities.

Kelsen Brewing also had great success at international beer competitions in 2014, winning four medals in total.  Kelsen took home gold for their Paradigm Brown Ale and Draken Robust Porter and their Double Battle Axe IPA took home a bronze.
