The latest brew from Rhode Island’s Microbrewery puts a new twist on an ancient style of beer!
First and foremost, “Cyclone Series Ryan” is an unique “rye” pale ale, sharing its name with one of the founders of Rhode Island’s microbrewery, their President Brent Ryan. For a variety of reasons, both technical and historical, rye beers are tricky to make. However, rye malt used yields an earthy ‘spicy’ craveable flavor which can’t really be created any other way. “Cyclone Ryan” comes hot on the heels of “Cylone Quinn”- a Rum Barrel Aged Porter – Newport Storm’s most popular brew to date!
Rye beer or “Roggenbier” is an ancient style of beer, common in Germany until the 15th century when the “Rheinheitsgebot” or German Beer Purity Laws went into effect. This politically motivated law mandated that beer consist of only water, barley and hops. Those who continued to brew using ingredients like rye were at risk of having their full barrels confiscated on the spot!
As to the technical difficulty of brewing a rye beer – it all comes down to science. Unlike barley or wheat, (common ingredients in modern beer) rye is a grain without a ‘husk.’ This means that during the brew, there are no insoluble husks to prevent the rye from sticking together. If not monitored closely, the ‘huskless’ gluten could form a dough rather than a beer! Luckily the Newport Storm brewers paid attention in science class… As a result of the technology upgrades at the new Newport Storm Brewery, three ‘experimental’ batches of this beer were able to be made to get it ‘just right.’ Chinook and Saaz hops were chosen to complement the earthy and spicy flavors added by the rye malt, while Amarillo hops were used to give the beer its American Pale Ale character.
“With each new brew in our Cyclone Series of limited release beers, we get the opportunity to create a truly memorable and unique beer,” states Brewery President Brent Ryan. “Rye is such a neat brewing ingredient, due to the unique flavor it imparts and the technical savvy needed to make it work. It’s the kind of challenge we willingly accept to make another fantastic one-of-a-kind brew for our fans!”
Only a very small batch of this beer was made. Ask for it at your CT, MA, or RI liquor store today before this latest, intense, spicy “Cyclone” blows out to sea!
