Head to Bavaria with PBS on a Fall Beer Tour Spotlighting Women Brewers and Craft Beer Makers

Share Post

Portland, OR ▪ July 31, 2015 – This fall the Pink Boots Society is heading to Bavaria for a beer and brewing study tour and you’re invited.  The insider’s tour is designed specifically to benefit the craft brewing industry and beer enthusiasts and to forge ties between independent brewing activists in Germany and North America

“We believe in Beer Without Borders. That’s why PBS is inviting serious beer lovers and members of the trade to join us on the road for the Beer, Bratwurst and Beyond study tour this fall,” says Emily Engdahl, Executive Director of the Pink Boots Society.  The beer tour starts and ends in Frankfurt. The dates are October 5-13, 2015. Space is limited. Info and reservations are available online at Treasures of Europe Tours, www.treasuresofeuropetours.com.

PBS is the world’s largest association of women in the beer and brewing trade, with over 2,100 members across the U.S. and around the world.

“When brewers, beer professionals, taste-makers and beer enthusiasts reach across borders to tell their stories, compare notes, trade ideas and hang together, the craft beer trade stands to benefit. This kind of cross-fertilization is critical to our industry,” added Engdahl.

The beer tour includes industry briefings, educational tours of under-the-radar regional breweries, tastings, meetings with up-and-coming women brewers, sessions with old-school artisanal beer makers and trailblazing craft brewers, visits to the abbey breweries and local food events.

Beer, Bratwurst and Beyond™ brings a new twist to beer travel. The beer tour will skip the Oktoberfest and Big Beer destinations, concentrating instead on hidden brewing hot-spots in Munich, Central Bavaria, the Upper Palatinate and Franconia.

PBS announced that two prominent German trade organizations representing independent breweries have signed on as local partners: the Association of Private Breweries in Bavaria and the Association of Breweries of Upper Franconia.

The beer and brewing paradigm is shifting in Germany. “Upstart craft brewers are challenging old orthodoxies with inventive, edgy new beer styles. Women brewers in Germany are at the top of their game and are slowly getting the recognition they deserve,” says Tom Conrad, of Treasures of Europe Tours, the Philadelphia-based operator that is offering the trip with PBS.

“New-vibe craft brewing is flourishing alongside the old-school artisanal beer culture that has defined German brewing for centuries. The new-old mix makes today’s German beer scene enormously exciting,” added Conrad.

Highlights of the beer tour include:

  • Kick-off event and private tasting hosted by the Association of Private Breweries in Bavaria
  • Session with Sister Doris, Germany’s last beer-brewing nun
  • Series of site visits and dialogues with pioneering women beer-makers in Franconia and the Upper Palatinate, including the Meinel sisters, master brewers in Hof
  • Private tour of a 1000-year-old abbey brewery, meeting with brewmaster and tasting
  • Survey and tasting led by a top German sommelier
  • Series of site visits, private sessions and tastings with Oswald Kundmueller, Andreas Gaenstaller and other craft beer brewers
  • Sausage seminar led by a master butcher who was chosen as Bavaria’s “Bratwurst King”
  • Visit to the home of Zoigl brewing in the remote Upper Palatinate region, including briefing and tasting
  • Site visit and behind-the-scenes look at local cheese-making and small-scale trout-farming
  • Fall Kirchweih festival in a Franconian village

and many other activities.

Samuel Adams, Stone Brewing Company, Sierra Nevada and Lagunitas Brewing Company have joined hands to sponsor the tour and a PBS members-only sweepstakes, which was launched to raise funds for the organization’s educational programming. Four lucky winners will travel free, courtesy of the tour sponsors.

The tour is currently open, but the group size is limited and space is going fast. Reserve online. Additional information is available at Treasures of Europe Tours. Related photos are available here. Learn about our generous sponsors here.
