EN FRANCAIS, CAJUN AND CREOLE ROCK AND ROLL CD RELEASED BY BAYOU TECHE BREWING
Arnaudville, September 28, 2011 – Arnaudville’s Bayou Teche Brewing, in collaboration with Louis Michot of the Lost Bayou Ramblers, the Lafayette Convention and visitors commission and Louisiana Folk Roots is releasing En Francais – Cajun and Creole Rock and Roll. The music CD is a compilation of 14 classic rock songs performed entirely in Cajun French.
Says Bayou Teche’s brewmaster Karlos Knott, “One morning, Louis and I were drinking too many cups café noir at my kitchen table. Reflecting on the challenges our beautiful Cajun French language is facing, we wanted to create something that would not only help preserve our native French, but inspire people to learn it and pass it on. We also thought the project should be fun not only for the listener, but also would be fun for us to do.” The pair decided to record several popular classic rock songs in Cajun French. The songs on the CD are performed by nine of Acadiana’s best known Cajun and Creole recording artists.
Said Michot, “When it comes to preserving the Cajun French language, music has always played a huge part. When people want to learn our language, and a lot of them happen to be musicians, where do they start, do they start with the music or with the language? We took well-know classic rock tunes and performed them entirely in Cajun French. Most listeners already know the English lyrics to these songs and can say to themselves, I know what that means in English, now I can say it in Cajun French.”
Louis Michot is listed as the producer of the CD. Said Knott, “Once we got rolling this was pretty much Louis’ baby. He arranged to have all of these extremely talented bands spend a day each in Dockside studios in Maurice. Dockside is an amazing place – gold records on the wall and a mixing board that looked like The Beatles could have recorded Abbey Road in there. Not being in the music business, it was inspiring to watch these talented young musicians record their versions of these rock songs.” Michot and Eric Heigle the engineer, recorded the artists during the day, and then worked late into the night, mixing and polishing each track. Said Michot, “The passion of everyone involved was evident – so much of everyone’s time was donated to the project. There was a vibe the whole time we worked on this CD that we were doing something important – and I think that shows in the quality of the finished tracks.”
Asked about why a local brewery was interested in helping record a music CD project, Knott said anyone who knows anything about Cajun and Zydeco music knows it has always been best enjoyed with dancing, good food, and cold beer. Knott, who is listed as the executive producer on the album said, “My contribution to this CD was that I had to stay away from the recording equipment, keep the coffee pot going and the fridge full of beer.”
Reflects Michot, “We were very fortunate to have such talented local bands show such an interest in this project – we have several Grammy nominees on this CD. Corey Ledet recorded Hey Joe and Roadhouse Blues, Bonsoir Catin did You’re No Good and Oh Darling. The Les Malfecteurs did versions of Money (That’s what I Want) and Wooly Bully and Feufollet recorded the Four Top’s Reach out (I’ll be There) and Big Star’s In the Street. Cedric Watson did a cover of The Beatles” Revolution, Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys recorded Neil Young’s Down by the River,. Isle Derniere has a version of Iron Man on the CD and the Lost Bayou Ramblers performs My Generation and I Love Rock and Roll. Also Brother Dege finishes the CD with a slide guitar version of The Star Spangled Banner.
The CD will be available on the Bayou Teche Brewing website store, on the CD Baby website, and for downloads at iTunes. You should also start seeing it in stores that carry music CD’s around Acadiana. Said Michot, “We hope to have some for sale at the upcoming Festival Acadiens et Creoles in Lafayette, and through all the usual online music sales sites.”
