The guys from Monkey Wrench Brewing (MWB) have been hard at work heating things up on the South’s craft beer scene. President and CEO Wayne Baxter is aiming to have pints available for sale this coming summer in Atlanta’s bars and beyond. He is the brains behind this up-and-coming microbrewery founded last year in Snellville, GA.
Baxter has been perfecting his homebrewing skills for the past 15 years and is now in the process of finalizing investors and inking a distribution deal. The MWB team can be found volunteering at brewfests, competing in homebrew contests, and supporting other local breweries throughout the state.
Head brewer for the crew is Doug Nace, a graduate of the Masters Brewers Program in Malting, Brewing Science & Engineering at UC Davis. He also has brewed for Cherokee Brewing Co., Percy’s Fish House & Brewery, Rock Bottom Brewery, and Rubicon Brewery. Not only has the MWB team established a strong grassroots following, they are very much on top of their digital game too. Media coordinator and artist Joseph Dreher maintains the “monkey business” online—check out the Facebook, Twitter, and official MWB website.
We recently caught up with Baxter, who was just awarded with the “People’s Choice Award” for his Very Merry Monkey Ale at the 2012 Summits Holidaze Homebrew Competition (Snellville, GA). “This Christmas-style, spiced ale was lots of fun to make, we even used local rosemary and honey in the brewing process.”
MWB has created a reputation for producing seriously tasty brews and experimenting with local ingredients. Their fans will be quick to tell you they’re a bunch of fun and “down to earth” guys.
MWB is Baxter’s second startup company; BaxTek Solutions, a reseller of wireless, RFID, and barcode technology products, was founded in 2000. BaxTek has been involved with craft beer distributors for the last four years in helping track inventory and mobile delivery applications. Near future plans for the Monkey men include launching a production brewery with a 30 bbl system and tasting room. Baxter plans to debut the brewery’s line in 2013 with an IPA, Pale Ale (for those hot summer in the South) and a fall seasonal. Be on the lookout for some innovative YouTube clips this winter.
