Ska Releases Craft Brewers Conference Event Schedule

Durango-based brewery to host several collaborative events in Denver next week

DENVER – April 3, 2014 – Ska Brewing Company will host several headline events during the Craft Brewers Conference (April 8 – 11) in Denver. To kick off the week, Ska will be releasing a new collaboration with Sweden’s Nynäshamns Ångbryggeri.

“A few years ago I wondered if the collaboration thing would peak out and go away,” said David Thibodeau, co-founder of Ska Brewing Company. “As brewers we are all so into what we are doing and you keep meeting cool people and you want to work together and share ideas.”

Ska’s three big events all have the collaborative theme to them.

Swedish Invasion – Wipa Snapa Release Party

Wednesday, April 9

5 – 8 p.m.

Star Bar

2137 Larimer, Denver CO 80205

In January, Ska Brewing welcomed Sweden’s Nynäshamns Ångbryggeri to Durango to brew a collaborative beer, a White IPA called Wipa Snapa. This is the second collaboration between the breweries. The White IPA style is a hybrid of the Belgian witbier and India Pale Ale styles, resulting in an unfiltered and well-carbonated beer brewed with a large proportion of wheat, and featuring spices and a strong hop presence. “Wit” means “white” in English, so-called because of the unfiltered yeast and wheat proteins that give these beers a hazy, white color.

The Wipa Snapa features ingredients from both Colorado and Sweden, including Sea Buckthorn berries—a tart, refreshing berry native to Scandinavia—and Chinook hops from Paonia, Colorado’s High Wire Hop Farms. The beer was also brewed with juniper berries, representing the high desert south and west of Durango, and substituting for the orange peel and coriander spices traditionally used in Belgian wit biers. Wipa Snapa comes in with a six percent ABV.

The Swedish brewers also collaborated with Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, a Delaware-based craft brewing powerhouse, producing a beer called Kvasir, part of Dogfish Head’s popular “Ancient Ales” series.

Swedish Invasion is the official release party for Wipa Snapa. Brewers from Ska and Dogfish Head founder Sam Calagione will be pouring both Wipa Snapa and Kvasir.
