Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales, Bill Covaleski of Victory Brewing Company, and Greg Koch of Stone Brewing Company have brewed the first batch of Saison du BUFF, a hellaciously herbaceous installment in their series of collaboration beers. Not content merely to brew a saison, the intrepid three embarked on a tour of the herb gardens of Simon and Garfunkel to inject a little extra spice into this classic style, adding a harmonious blend of parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme.
This song-worthy saison is matched in intensity only by the passion the trio of great brewers for have for the promulgation of craft beer. The “du BUFF” moniker refers to the original collaboration between Dogfish Head, Stone, and Victory, when the Brewers United For Freedom of Flavor (BUFF) organization was born in 2003. The impetus behind the formation of BUFF was quality distribution and equitable placement of craft beers in retail establishments. As the respective breweries attained higher levels of appreciation, BUFF has expanded its goals to include collaborating on beers of character – with the resulting Saison du BUFF representing the first of what is hoped to be many such partnerships.
