Craft Brewers Grow Mustaches for Men’s Health Awareness

By Kirby Bennett

In an effort to raise awareness and money around men’s health issues, specifically prostate and testicular cancer, several breweries are hosting Movember events. A portmanteau of mustache and November, Movember has brought mens cancer issues to the nation’s attention. Craft Brewers are participating in the fundraising with activities and events ranging from mustache-growing competitions, beer releases and even a ‘stache bash.

Blue Point Brewery in Long Island, N.Y.

Blue Point is having a mustache-growing challenge where participants can track their upper lip progress online or via Polaroids in the tasting room. Participants can also raise money online and the brewery will be giving away 1/2 and 1/6 barrel kegs as prizes for various catagories such as Best Cowboy ‘Stache, Next Year Try Rogaine, and the Just for Men (grayest mustache). There will also be prizes for the ladies for best beer foam mustache, handmade and most original.

Sun King Brewing, Indianapolis, Ind.

Sun King is having several Movember events including a beer dinner, a Moustache Bash, and an End of Movember Gala. According to the brewery, a hairy upper lip is required to enter the Moustache bash, and men are encouraged to “show off your flavor savor in celebration of the hirsute upper lip, and while you’re at it you may just win some kick ass prizes and goodies, not to mention the adoration of your furry faced friends!” In addition, Sun King brewed a special beer, named Stiff Upper Lip, for the occasion. Stiff Upper Lip is a brown lager weighing in at 4.9 percent ABV with 30 IBUs.
