Movember: Craft Breweries with a Cause

Share Post

If there is something that craft brewers are good at, other than brewing amazing beer, it’s growing facial hair. Which is why many craft breweries are participating in the men’s health awareness movement called Movember, or Mustache November.

The Movember Foundation is a global organization who has raised $559 million for men’s health awareness. According to The Movember Foundation, they “challenge men to grow moustaches during Movember (formerly known as November), to spark conversation and raise vital funds for its men’s health programs. To date, 4 million moustaches have been grown worldwide, but we won’t stop growing as long as serious men’s health issues exist.”

Men who participate in this fundraiser shave their faces on October 31, grow Mo’s (or mustaches) all through November, and ask their friends and family to donate for the cause.

Not only does Movember raise money for men’s health, it allows men to talk freely about their health issues and concerns, and encourages them to get checkups regularly. The whole campaign started over a conversation between friends, so the craft beer community seems like the perfect setting for such a conversation.

Many people in the craft beer community are participating in this awareness campaign, which is just another example of craft brewers giving for a cause. Below are just a few examples of breweries who are participating in Movember:

Harpoon Brewery

This Movember marks the seventh straight year that Harpoon Brewery (Boston, MA) has done a mustache competition. Although this began as a friendly competition, last year they teamed up with The Movember Foundation to promote men’s health with the mustaches they were already planning to grow.

In their blog post, “Hair Today Gone Tomorrow,” they explain what Movember means to them. “While this competition is meant to solidify us as a team while enjoying the awkward awesomeness of seeing co-workers transform into often creepy looking people, Movember adds a second dimension.  Our efforts are rewarded by friends, family, and loyal Harpoon customers through their generous donations to our team.  Harpoon’s Private Stache raised over $6,000 for the Movember organization last year and we’re hoping to have another banner year.”

Sin City Brewing Co.

Sin City Brewing Co. (Las Vegas, NV) is participating in Movember, or as they have deemed it “MovemBEER” by giving discounts to their customers who show up to the brewery in November with a stache.  They have given discounts based on the awesomeness of the stache in question. Sin City describes the five tiers of facial hair as:

  • The Barley Chaplin: 10% off
  • The basic stache, or HopPrentice: 20% off
  • Handlebars, or HandleBEERS: 30% off
  • The EinSTEIN: 40% off
  • Fu Man BREW: 50% off and rightfully so!

Whether you are growing a stache of your own or planning to donate to the cause, cheers to you! And happy Movember!
