Call to Arms Brewing Company to Host Third Annual Catalina Wine Mixer

Share Post

Who: Denver-based Call to Arms Brewing Company, a gathering place passionately committed to quality, community, and camaraderie, will host its 3rd annual Catalina Wine Mixer to kick off the Great American Beer Festival weekend.

Why: In the movie Step Brothers, the Catalina Wine Mixer is the most celebrated event in the entire movie. Founders, Chris Bell and Jon Cross, are not only huge Step Brothers fans, but they love wine barrel-aged beers. They felt that they needed to create an event to showcase these beers with an exclusive event during the most celebrated beer festival of the year.

What: The Catalina Wine Mixer is a celebration of the brewery’s wine barrel-aged beers from the past year. Wine barrels offer an endless “painter’s palette” when it comes to producing beers. Not only are there many different varietals of wine to provide the base canvas, but there are so many different brewing techniques available.

Beers to be tapped include:

Beautiful Impression – ABV 5.7%

Beautiful Impression is an oak-fermented Brett Farmhouse Ale. Traditionally brewed and oak-fermented, it offers notes of guava, pineapple and orange zest – with a balance of soft vanilla from the barrels. This beer was brewed in collaboration with The Brewtography Project and Hotel Teatro.

Lychee Sour – ABV 6.4%

This exotic beer is soured in Chardonnay barrels with Lactobacillus delbrueckii, Brettanomyces Bruxellensis II and dry hopped with Mosaic. The addition of lychee fruit produces an earthy fruity beer that has notes of pear, pineapple, and a dry lychee finish.

Majestic Wolf Lamp – ABV 8%

This magenta-hued sour is a jammy blend; offering complex notes of boysenberry, blackcurrant, candied cherry and gentle oak that results in a pronounced sour finish with a slight finishing sweetness. Majestic Wolf Lamp, which pays homage to the wolf lamp scene in the movie Step Brothers, is reminiscent of farm stand blackberry jam.

Old Old Wooden Ship – ABV 6.1%

Call to Arms reserved a portion of Beautiful Impression and blended it with the house blend of Pediococcus and Brettanomyces, and then let the saison age for seven months. Old Old Wooden Ship is a dry and crisp fruity beer with a tart, finish and lingering notes of soft oak. This port barrel-aged sour saison has notes of ripe nectarine, grapefruit, guava and tart cherry.

Still Gleekin’ – ABV 6.3% beer and food course

Two years ago, Call to Arms debuted their first collaboration with Novel Strand, notoriously known as The Notorious G.L.E.E.K. The breweries knew they had to bring this beer back one way or another. Vol. II: Still Gleekin’ is a sour ale, uniquely soured without hops, then dry hopped with Mosaic hops in a cabernet sauvignon barrel after fermentation.

Still Gleekin’ is reminiscent of a pineapple wine with notes of fresh peach, pear, pineapple and white grape. The sour is 100 percent fermented in oak and includes Lactobacillus delbrueckii, Brettanomyces Bruxellensis II, and Mosaic hops.

When: Thursday, September 20, 2018 from 12:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
