DENVER — Little Machine® is the first brewery in Colorado to receive the vegan certification from BevVeg International. BevVeg is the world’s leader in vegan certification for beer, wine and spirits. The word “vegan” is not regulated by any government entity or law. BevVeg exists to raise the standard for consumer transparency by requiring companies who apply to disclose all ingredients and processes.
Although not commonly talked about, animal products are very common in beer, especially animal-derived finings and lactose. Finings used to clarify beer include swim bladder or gelatin. Lactose is often (and increasingly) added to beer to aid in flavor, body and mouthfeel. Since beer manufacturers are not required to disclose product ingredients, consumers are rarely aware of the use of animal derived ingredients in their beer.
Although Little Machine is proud to be certified vegan, its mission is broader. “This is not a vegan issue, this is about consumers in general, wanting truthful information about what they are eating, drinking, or using. Full disclosure,” states Carissa Kranz, esq., founder and CEO of BevVeg International. And Little Machine agrees.
Head Brewer Brett Williams states “Brewing plant-based beer is important to us but it’s only part of the conversation. For us, this is about beer purity in general.” In addition to animal derived products, other common additives to beer include artificial flavoring, silicone and carrageenan, as well as preservatives from the addition of such products as pastries and candies. Little Machine is committed to brewing pure beers without any animal derived products, unnecessary or artificial ingredients.
