After Voting, Chill at Election Day Safe Haven at Saint Arnold

HOUSTON, November 1, 2016 – Saint Arnold Brewing Co. (www.saintarnold.com) is encouraging everyone to vote and then head to the brewery, which will serve as a safe haven on Election Day. The oldest craft brewery in Texas will open its doors on Tuesday, November 8th, for Election Day Safe Haven at Saint Arnold, providing voters a sanctuary from politics. Not to be confused with the election night gatherings thrown by the political parties, Election Day Safe Haven at Saint Arnold will be a strictly unplugged affair.

Election Day Safe Haven at Saint Arnold will start at 11 a.m. at Saint Arnold Brewing Co., 2000 Lyons Avenue in Houston, and continue until after polls close on the West Coast. It will serve as a TV-free zone and feature beer specials and stickers for voters proclaiming, “I Survived Election Day 2016.” Voters over age 21 who show proof of voting can purchase their first pint for $1.

“We encourage everyone to vote, and after voting, the most important public service we can offer is a place for voters to shelter in place away from the stress, anxiety and talking heads,” said Lennie Ambrose, Saint Arnold Director of Marketing and Events. “Beer has a long history of bringing people together and fostering a sense of kinship, commonality and community, which is what Election Day Safe Haven at Saint Arnold is all about.”

Pollsters say feelings of stress and anxiety are shared by both political parties. A recent Pew Research Center survey of more than 4,500 adults found that nearly 60 percent of Americans on social media are stressed out by online political interactions. More than a third of social media users are “worn out” by the amount of political content they encounter. The sense of being worn out is not a partisan phenomenon – 38 percent of Democrats and 37 percent of Republicans describe themselves that way.

A separate survey by Harris Poll on behalf of the American Psychological Association (APA) found that men and women are equally likely to say the 2016 U.S. presidential election is a very or somewhat significant source of stress. Election stress can be triggered by arguments, images and videos that can heighten anxiety, concern and frustration. The APA offers the following stress management tips:

  • Turn off the newsfeed or take a digital break.
  • Avoid getting into discussions about the election if you think they have the potential to escalate to conflict.
  • Consider volunteering in your community, advocating for an issue you support or joining a local group.
  • Whatever happens, life will go on. Avoid catastrophizing, and maintain a balanced perspective.
  • Vote and wear your “I voted” sticker with pride.
