Believe in Beer

Seattle, WA – Beer and running may not seem like natural companions, but a local trail runner aims to prove that they pair together just fine.

Breweries could use a helping hand right now. Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, surveys by the Brewers Association report a 65% national reduction in craft beer sales. In Washington state, where craft beer provides 6,300 direct jobs and has an economic impact of $1.4 billion, the hardship is devastating and it extends from brewery payrolls directly into the health of the communities.

Evan Williams, a member of the 2019 US Mountain Ultra Trail running team and associate/engineer at Flying Lion Brewing in Columbia City, Seattle is making an effort to put a dent in the losses. In coordination with the Bottleshare/Brewers Association Believe In Beer fundraiser, he is hoping to inspire support for local brewers by running a 100 km (62 mi) route to Tacoma and back. The half-way point is purposefully aligned with a curbside pint pickup from the brand-new Sig Brewing Company. He will also grab cans from 7 Seas and Camp Colvos and carry them home to celebrate being part of the family of small, independent craft.

The run is set for May 7, Thursday, on remote roads on the Kitsap Peninsula and Vashon Island, supported by On Running and the Seattle Running Club. During the run, the public can follow along on his Instagram account: evandouglaswilliams, as well as watch live chats with the brewers, distance runners, and community leaders who have inspired him to attempt this challenge.

More details for virtual participation and the day-of schedule may be found on Evan’s blog www.threeleftturns.run or by sending an email to evandwilliams@gmail.com.
