Chuckanut Brewery: Roasted Chuckanuts British Bitter Collaboration

Chuckanut Brewers and Rebellion Brewery British brewer collaborate on British Style Bitter

It’s a match made in beer heaven: Will Kemper, Chuckanut brewmaster and head brewer Michael Toomes collaborate with Ed Bates, head brewer of Rebellion brewery, Marlow, England. Together all the brewers brewed a British Bitter called Roasted Nuts in England. Brewing it in America the brewers thought it would be appropriate to call it Roasted Chuckanuts!

When Chuckanut owners Mari & Will were brewing in Istanbul, Turkey they met Mark Gloyens owner/brewmaster from Rebellion Brewery in Marlow, England. The Kempers invited the Rebellion brewmaster to come brew in Bellingham at Chuckanut. He couldn’t make it so he sent his head brewer Ed for the trip. Ed and the Chuckanut brewerrs decided to brew this complex, intense and distinctive bitter made with American Cascade hops and East Kent Goldings British hops for a great American British collaboration to brew together at Chuckanut.

The collaboration Bitter has a rich character created from a flavorsome blend of malts, accented by an aromatic hop character and finishes with an earthy hop flavor. The brewers have wonderfully paired American and English styles to create a rich complex bitter with a deep ruby color. This type of British bitter is a great match for fish – not only the standard fish and chips, but a nice grilled salmon. Roasted Chuckanuts is also a fine accompaniment with braised or grilled pork, which brings out the sweeter malty notes. Mild sausages, like British bangers, are another natural pairing with a British bitter. And when it’s time for a rich cheesy dish like Chuckanut’s Mac n Cheese the bitter shines through.
