Texas Craft Brewers Guild Brings Firkin Fest to North Texas

The Texas Craft Brewers Guild is adding to its stable of Texas craft brewer-focused festivals with the launch of the North Texas Firkin Fest, set for April 25, 2015, at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas. The event is c0-presented by Peticolas Brewing along with sponsors Deep Ellum Brewing, Real Ale Brewing, Saint Arnold Brewing and Martin Frost and Hill.

This event, the third festival developed by the Texas Craft Brewers Guild, a nonprofit trade organization representing Texas craft brewers, is strategically located between Dallas and Fort Worth to showcase the amazing growth of craft beer in the North Texas region, from just two in 2010 to over 12 breweries launching over the next three years and more on the way.

The festival is also a showcase of the amazing talent of the emerging brewers in the regional. By structuring the event as a “firkin fest” — for which the only beer served will be cask conditioned and gravity poured out of containers called “firkins” — the festival will allow the brewers to flex their creative muscles.

“Producing cask beer is the ultimate challenge for craft brewers. Unlike draught or packaged beer, there is no filtering to arrest the brewing process at a predictable stage, and there is no controlled carbonation. Instead, with cask-conditioned beer, yeast is kept alive in the beer to continue fermentation and naturally carbonate the beer,” says Charles Vallhonrat, executive director of the Texas Craft Brewers Guild. “When moving their brews into the firkin, brewers can infuse the beer with extra ingredients — adding extra hops, coffee, cacao nibs, vanilla beans, fruits, candies, nuts, peppers and more. It is a ‘blind’ process — once those ingredients go in and the firkin is sealed, even the brewer doesn’t know the outcome until the cask is tapped.”

Fifteen Texas craft brewers will be participating in the inaugural North Texas Firkin Fest with over 25 firkins being tapped:
